The current CBA expires on Dec. 1, at which point MLB is widely expected to lock out the players. The league is going to argue for a salary cap system, which the players, of course, want no part of. Most likely, the lockout will linger into at least February and quite possibly March but hopefully no longer before an agreement gets done. Murphy lasted just six days on the active roster before getting hurt on a catcher’s interference during Sunday’s game. Sandy Léon will place him as Drake Baldwin’s backup, but the bigger beneficiary here is Dominic Smith, who will resume seeing more time at DH against righties with Murphy absent. Mets selected the contract of OF A.J. Ewing from Triple-A Syracuse. The 21-year-old Ewing is joining a Mets club desperate for any sort of boost. He hit .339/.447/.514 with two homers and 17 steals in 30 games between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse. The power won’t carry over very well, but the on-base skills might and he figures to remain aggressive on the basepaths, potentially making him of some use in mixed leagues. He figures to start regularly against righties at least until Luis Robert Jr. returns and the Mets reevaluate things. Dodgers acquired OF Alek Thomas from the Diamondbacks for OF Jose Requena. Thomas was designated for assignment over the weekend so that the Diamondbacks could add top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt to the 40-man roster. Thomas was hitting .181/.222/.340 as Arizona’s center fielder against right-handers. However, he has two years of team control remaining on his contract and was once a top 100 outfield prospect, so it makes sense for the Dodgers to take a gamble. He’ll head to the minors for now. Requena is a 17-year-old outfielder who signed with the Dodgers in January for a $372,500 bonus. Yu Darvish has begun throwing on flat ground as he recovers from offseason elbow surgery. Darvish had surgery in October to repair his right ulnar collateral ligament with an internal brace and a flexor tendon repair. He posted on his Twitter account that he has started playing catch. Given the timing of his surgery, he is likely out for the entire 2026 season, but it seems as though the 39-year-old has not officially called it a career. Rays manager Kevin Cash said Chandler Simpson left last night’s game with a leg injury that “might just have been a cramp more than anything.” Cash said that all the strength tests done after the game were good, and Simpson’s health, “from all the reports, sounds really good.” He did acknowledge that Simpson would likely get a day off on Tuesday with a left-hander on the mound, but he doesn’t expect Simpson to miss more time. Rafael Devers went 2-for-3 with a homer, two walks and three runs scored as the Giants took down the Dodgers 9-3 on Monday. Devers homered on a splitter that Roki Sasaki left up on the zone. It was his third homer in five games, bringing his season total to five in 168 plate appearances. It’s the first time this year that he’s scored three runs. He’s totaled seven runs scored in his last five games after touching home plate just nine times in his first 36 games. It’s a bit unclear when Eovaldi will start next, but there’s optimism he isn’t facing an extended absence, and could potentially avoid a trip to the injured list. It’s an extremely encouraging development after the 36-year-old veteran was scratched from Monday’s scheduled start against the Diamondbacks with left side tightness. There should be a more definitive update from the club on his status in the coming days once he resumes throwing. Jonathan Aranda went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and three RBI on Monday, lifting the Rays to an 8-5 win over the Blue Jays. Aranda has been one of the more impactful middle-of-the-order run producers this season with a whopping 32 RBI through 40 contests. The 27-year-old first baseman delievered a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single before taking Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman deep in the fifth inning for his eighth round-tripper of the year. He’s been on fire recently, hitting .346 (18-for-52) with two homers and 11 RBI over his last 15 games. Andrés Giménez launched two homers and tallied five RBI on Monday in a loss to the Rays. Giménez took Rays starter Drew Rasmussen deep for a three-run homer in the second inning before repeating the feat against reliever Ian Seymour in the seventh to record the first multi-homer performance of his career. The 27-year-old infielder was one of the few bright spots in this one as he was responsible for all five of Toronto’s runs in a losing effort. He’s up to five round-trippers already through 38 games after mustering only seven across 101 contests last year in his Blue Jays debut. A Division of NBCUniversal.
